Do you need to keep dmg files. Jan 02, 2009 But after installing a program like Google Earth and putting the needed file in Applications, do I need to keep the original dmg file. Show more After installing a program or application on Mac, do you need to keep the original dmg file, or can you just delete it? On a game it usually functions as cd, so I keep those files. Dec 27, 2006 No, you do not need to keep the.dmg file. I presume you've already double-clicked the file and followed through whatever installation process was presented to you(?). If so, the application will be installed - probably in your Applications folder - so you can safely delete the.dmg file.dmg files. A DMG file can certainly be opened in Windows, but that doesn't mean you can actually use anything you find within it. For example, say a DMG file isn't just storing compressed files like images and videos but is instead holding a software program.
