5e Super Index – Essential Tables and Where to Find Them. February 16, 2018 February 16, 2018 by finlam. Magic Item Tables (DMG 144-149) History, Properties, Details, Quirks of Magic Items (DMG 142-143). Random Dungeon Generator Tables (DMG 290-301) Skill Checks. Skills and associated Abilities (PHB 174). Dungeons & Dragons v.3.5 - Random Magic Item Tables by Magecraft The Dungeon Master’s Guide presents tables for the random determination of magic items, however, many older gamers are used to a random determination system that doesn’t take into account for the level of the party and may wish to use such.

Once the general category is determined, the DM can choose a specific item from the tables below. (Each item on the tables is given a die roll number so that the DM can select items randomly, if he chooses.) Some tables have several subtables. Each subtable has a range of numbers in parentheses at the top.

These tables are intended as a general reference and guidelineregarding what a party of adventurers might get on the openmarket for an item if they worked at it. The main purpose for thispage is to provide data for discussion of in-party pricing of magicitems when loot is distributed.

As there are no prices assigned to magic items in Second EditionAD&D, the prices on this page were arrived at by using1st Ed. DMG prices whenever possible, using 1stEd. Unearthed Arcana prices when the DMG didn't cover the item, usingHackMaster (4th Ed.) prices when neither AD&D sourceprovided a price and finally making something that seemed reasonableup in the few cases when none of those sources sufficed. Then theresults were adjusted where necessary to fit the economics of the gameworld.

Note that this is not the source I refer to for prices, andcertainly not what I refer to for the selection of magic items for mycampaign. I make use of a considerably larger, more customizedversion of this page - its evolutionary descendant, if you will. Thatversion contains far too many Things YouDon't Want To Know (the whole Miscellaneous Magic: Sausagestable, for example) to be used here. Suffice it to say that this pagemirrors that one wherever possible and should be sufficient for partyuse.

Oncethe general category is determined, the DM can choose a specific itemfrom the tables below. (Each item on the tables is given a die rollnumber so that the DM can select items randomly, if he chooses.) Sometables have several subtables. Each subtable has a range of numbersin parentheses at the top. To select the appropriate subtable, checkthe die listed after the table's title. Roll the listed die and findthe result in the number range at the top of one of the subtables. This is the subtable you read to determine which item in the list hasbeen found.

Forexample, the Potions and Oils table has '(D6)' after the title. That means you roll a 6-sided die to determine which Subtable (A, B,or C) to read. If you roll a 2, for example, you check subtable A(which has '1-2' at the top); if you roll a 6, you readsubtable C (which has '5-6' at the top). Roll 1d20 on theappropriate subtable to determine the specific item found. Then turnto the descriptions following the tables to find out what each itemdoes.

Monsters With Treasure

Every monster has a treasure rating (indicating how much treasure it has, although for some creatures the rating is “None”). The tables found below are used to determine the specifics. After referencing the level and kind of treasure (coins, goods, items) found in the creature’s description, roll on the appropriate row and columns of the proper table.

When generating an encounter dealing with monsters away from their lair, remember that a creature only takes what it can easily carry with it. In the case of a creature that cannot use treasure, that generally means nothing. The monster safeguards or hides its treasure as well as it can, but it leaves it behind when outside the lair. Intelligent creatures that own useful, portable treasure (such as magic items) tend to carry and use these, leaving bulky items at home. Treasure can include coins, goods, and items. Creatures can have varying amounts of each, as follows.

Standard

Refer to the treasure tables and roll d% once for each type of treasure (Coins, Goods, Items) on the Level section of the table that corresponds to the creature’s Challenge Rating (for groups of creatures, use the Encounter Level for the encounter instead). Some creatures have double, triple, or even quadruple standard treasure; in these cases, roll for each type of treasure two, three, or four times.

None

The creature collects no treasure of its own.

Nonstandard

Some creatures have quirks or habits that affect the types of treasure they collect. These creatures use the same treasure tables, but with special adjustments.

Fractional Coins

Roll on the Coins column in the section corresponding to the creature’s Challenge Rating, but divide the result as indicated.

% Goods or Items

The creature has goods or items only some of the time. Before checking for goods or items, roll d% against the given percentage. On a success, make a normal roll on the appropriate Goods or Items column (which may still result in no goods or items).

Double Goods or Items

Roll twice on the appropriate Goods or Items column.

Parenthetical Notes

Some entries for goods or items include notes that limit the types of treasure a creature collects.

When a note includes the word “no,” it means the creature does not collect or cannot keep that thing. If a random roll generates such a result, treat the result as “none” instead.

When a note includes the word “only,” the creature goes out of its way to collect treasure of the indicated type. Treat all results from that column as the indicated type of treasure.

It’s sometimes necessary to reroll until the right sort of item appears.

Using The Treasure Table

Cross-reference the level of the treasure on the left with the type of treasure. The level of the treasure is equal to the CR of the monsters in the encounter. A standard treasure (one that includes coins, goods, and items) requires three rolls, one for each category.
